Son Calenda is the essence of the Oaxacan party. It is, as many know, a song from the Isthmus, a sound that repeats and repeats, and seems like it will never end, and when you go home happy you still have it in your head. It is a song that is heard at every party and every calenda, and there are seasons when Oaxaca seems like an infinite calenda, like during the season of the dead.
I love how those days are celebrated in Mexico and especially in Oaxaca. Working on this series I surprised myself, creating increasingly folkloric images, scenes full of figures (in the mere party), in traditional dresses full of details, so you can distinguish what community or type of party it refers to.
Reflecting on the regional culture, traditions and customs confirmed what I had been realizing day after day since I arrived here...
Here folklore is alive, you can fill your eyes with it on every corner, you hear it in the next neighborhood and you can eat it in the market. And it's delicious to go out and let your senses be filled with all that.
